NEW YEAR GOALS for 2025 ?

Try Yoga Sankalpa - Why It's Better Than A New Year's Resolution

Sankalpa is a Sanskrit term in yogic philosophy that refers to a heartfelt desire, an intention to do something.  It tends to be an affirmation and comes from deep within.  It’s slightly different to a resolution because unlike a personal goal to achieve something, a Sankalpa is a short positive affirmation or declaration such as

“ I am happy and healthy” rather than “ I want to find happiness and health”

Notice the first statement is in the present tense rather than, the second which is always in the future so you see a Sankalpa or resolve is usually phrased in the terms, “I am,” rather than, “I will.”

Most New Year’s Resolutions are phrased, “I will.”

“I will go to the gym more.”

“I will give up chocolate or alcohol”.

“I will be kind and a better person.”

We set goals. They almost always fail because of the phrase, “I will.” This term, “I will go to the gym,” seems to indicate something that will be done in the future, and not here and now. It can easily be put off, till tomorrow. They also often fail because they start from an assumption that what we are currently doing is not good enough.

The Yoga resolution or Sankalpa, on the other hand, offers a good alternative to the New Year’s Resolution. A Sankalpa or resolve is usually phrased in the terms, “I am,” such as:

“I am a kind and giving person.”

“I am going to eat more healthily”.

“I am going to the gym more.”

All you need to do is express what you are doing or the state you are in, or want to be in, and set a positive intention and send out that positive message into the Universe.  Essentially a Sankalpa is a statement you can rely on and call upon to remind you of your true nature and guide your choices. You simply need to repeat it, either aloud or to yourself, a few times each day to set that intention.  Give it a go - You never know, this could be the start of something wonderful…  Happy New Year

Exciting News!!!  New Chair Yoga Classes starting February 10th 2025

I'm excited to introduce some new chair yoga classes starting in February 2025.  if you have always thought about practising yoga and finding all the wonderful benefits it would bring you, but due to certain personal circumstances you are unable to join in with 'regular' classes, then....these classes will be for you!!! Wheelchair users very welcome.

Chair yoga incorporates some of the regular (standing) postures, but with the aid of a chair, either sitting or standing with the chair as a support.  We will practice breathing disciplines and also have a session at the close of class with a guided relaxation/meditation section.  Hopefully this will leave you not only calmer and more relaxed, but with a renewed vigour to go about the rest of your day. Props and (some) mats are provided but if you do have a mat please bring one along (this is for standing your chair on to avoid slippage)

If you have any questions regarding any of these classes please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will give you more information.

Looking forward to seeing some of you on the mat (or chair) soon
